This week we have been learning about the AFL/Australian football league. We created a shadow affect with an AFL ball focusing on creating a dark and light affect with paint.


Here are some fun facts about the AFL:

  • AFL stands for Australian Football League.

  • The AFL match is 80 minutes.

  • The game is split into 4 quarters.

  • The pitch is an oval shape.

  • The Victorian football league was founded in 1877.

  • There are 11 players on the pitch.

  • Sean Wight and Jim Stynes were the first Irish players to play.

  • The 1950s saw the growth of TV broadcasting in Australia.

  • The women’s football league was founded in2017.

  • The women’s team has their own name - the AFLW.

  • The average number of fans is 35,000 for each home game.

  • Each team plays 22 games per season.

  • Many Irish men moved to Australia, they became known as the Galahs.

  • Many football players joined World War 1.

  • 18 teams are in the AFL league.
